On the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the Vedun Ensemble / Trutamora Slovenica and after more than 50 years of ethnomusicological research and presentation of Slovene, European and world musical heritage by Mira Omerzel-Mirit, Ph.D.

Musicians: Mira Omerzel-Mirit, Tine Omerzel Terlep, Igor Meglič, Mojka Žagar, Matjaž Doljak

In the recordings of the Vedun Ensemble, musicians (and sound therapists) revisit their Slavic sound roots – from Slovenia and the Balkans to East Slavic lands all the way to Siberia. Creative sound images bring to life the inspiration of Slavic and Old Slovene harmonies and the connections of art and (ethnomusicological) science, musical heritage and spiritual wisdom with the ancestors (as well as the modern ensemble Vedun) attuned with nature, the universe and the Earth – guardians of mellifluous harmonies of the world and timelessness in time; to preserve the memory of the past in the future.

The Vedun Ensemble is named after the Slavic deity Vedun, who can see the sacred and holds a horn, and after the ancient masters Veduns of the same name – outstanding musicians, healers and masters of modifying and attuning the out-of-tune. In their sound practices and melos, the musicians follow the heritage of their Slavic ancestors. In trance playing they revive the almost forgotten sonorous languages and centuries-old musical, spiritual and therapeutic performance wisdom, especially throat and spontaneous singing and instrumental play with the instruments of the past.

The Veduns of the ensemble of the same name also say that the mythical nature of the Slavic soul, the genomes of the Slavic and Old Slovene as well as the ecological attitude and attention of our ancestors toward all living beings on the planet still resonate in them. Their musical creativity therefore contains both the historical memory and a touch of personal (authorial) feeling for the Slavic heritage. They also revive the always valuable and meaningful (folk) songs and musical traditions that were once highly revered but are now sadly forgotten or ignored: these include, in particular, the performance practices of spontaneous and momentary (and therefore not-learned) singing and playing. The Vedun musicians want to bring to the audience the internalized and a wide range of Slavic musical sensibility that permeates the creativity and performances of the Vedun Ensemble.

Musicians, who are multi-instrumentalists and singers, perform music in semi-trans, ′capturing′ the spontaneous and unrepeatable sounds of the moment. In this way, they restore the sanctity and forgotten priestly and healing role of music. The music of the Vedun Ensemble′s sound therapists is truly special. May these sounds expand your consciousness and awareness, may they illuminate your day and brighten your spirit!
